Review: When We Collided by Emery Lord

We are seventeen and shattered and still dancing. We have messy, throbbing hearts, and we are stronger than anyone could ever know…

Jonah never thought a girl like Vivi would come along.

Vivi didn’t know Jonah would light up her world.

Neither of them expected a summer like this…a summer that would rewrite their futures.

In an unflinching story about new love, old wounds, and forces beyond our control, two teens find that when you collide with the right person at just the right time, it will change you forever.

Goodreads

Plot

I honestly did not enjoy the first half of this book. The insta-love was just so jarring. I mean usually insta-love at least has one or two layers over it but this one was just right there in the open. It felt so unrealistic. I mean Vivi fell in love with Jonah within a week of knowing him. A WEEK!

I mean listen to this: “…she leaps onto me, locking her arms around my neck. she kisses me like someone with failing lungs, like her only source of oxygen is me.”

That was after two weeks! Two weeks!!

So I actually had to put this book down for a few days to finish a book for a paid review and unfortunately that book really sucked. Anyway, when I finally went back to When We Collided, I somehow found that I really liked it.

I really don’t know what happened. I guess once you passed the tragic insta love bit, everything just became okay again and it actually became so important because the book went in depth into mental illness and it was really well done.

Characters

Vivi

I loved Vivi. I’m not going to spoil anything by letting you know what exactly her mental illness was but I will say that she really brightened up the book and just the world in general with her colorful imagination and her antics.

I overall just really enjoyed her character and what she symbolized. I mean I related to a lot of the things she said and felt and I found myself highlighting loads of quotes.

Jonah

Jonah was a very mellow character but he had a lot of heart and depth which I really liked. I thought he was a very nice contrast to Vivi who was so much wilder then he is.

He was just this very nice dude who had a lot of crap happen in his life. Something I related to very strongly.

Overall

Overall I really enjoyed the book. It started out horribly and very rocky. I mean I downright hated the first 30% or so of the book. But once the mental illness aspect kicked in, I found that I was relating so much and I was just enjoying the whole feel and vibe of the book.

I mean it deals with a very serious illness and I think she very accurately portrayed it as well as taught readers about the symptoms and things like that.

So read this book. It’s really awesome.
