Update On My Internship

Hi guys! So two weeks ago, I started my internship at Youth.SG. It’s honestly been a crazy two weeks and I thought that I would give you guys an update on how it’s going and what I’ve been doing because a lot of you actually were asking me about it on Twitter (which was very sweet of you all).

So firstly, let me clear up one thing that a lot of you seemed very confused about. I didn’t find this internship myself. I do Mass Communications in Polytechnic which is a three year thing that will leave you with a diploma. So in our third year, we do a six month long internship. Some schools only have three months or less. Ours is six.

So we pick the general field that we want to be in (I picked journalism) and the school will pair you with a company based on what they have observed about your personality and attitude and then you will go for an interview and everything.

Now that is out of the way, let me tell you all about it.

So the very first day, my dad dropped me at work and I was so panicky that I actually got there two hours before I had to. I work at a building called The Red Box and it’s in Orchard road which is the shopping district in our country.

I start work at 9.30am and end at 6pm and I get a two hour lunch everyday. It’s a very comfortable time because I only take 40 minutes to get to work so I can actually sleep till 7am which is perfect for me.

As for the work, I love it. My main job there is to write which is what I do best. I pitch ideas, I attend events and concerts and I write about them. I write all day and I’ve never been happier.

Last week I attended the launch party of the Music Run at W Singapore which was amazing and there was free flow wine and heated toilet seats (yes. I know. It was fancy af). Then I attended the media only design trail on Saturday which was tiring but still fun and I got a good article out of it. I got to meet a food photographer, visit a letterpress house and learn about flowers or something.

This week was only a four day week because of Good Friday but it was a very busy one. I published three articles. One of which was a political piece. It was a dangerous piece to do considering the political climate in Singapore but my editors and office gave me the green light and were actually quite happy with the article so that was good. I’ve got a whole lot of articles scheduled to go up this week on Youth.SG so you can check that out and sign up or favourite the page or whatever it is you want to do. Quite frankly I’ll just be glad if you checked out one or two of my posts.

As for my colleagues, I am honestly so happy with the people I’m working with. Everyone is so nice and friendly and ready to lend a hand to help or teach. I love the people I’m working with. They are all such special little snowflakes.

I’ve got an exciting week coming up. I’m actually going to be getting to interview the Blue Man Group and then watch a media only showing of their performance in Marina Bay Sands which I literally can’t wait for.

So that’s all the good stuff and you’re probably wondering if there’s anything that I don’t like about my job. There actually is. Firstly, food is so freaking expensive! Orchard road is a very uptown kind of place and so everything is sadly very pricy. My lunches are usually between $6.90 to $10 and that kind of sucks.

Secondly, we don’t have a bathroom on the level my office is in which sucks for me and my tiny bladder.

Thirdly (is that a word?), our work laptops are all Windows ones. As someone who has been using Apple for absolutely eons, this is a very difficult thing for me to adjust to. But I mean I don’t have an option so that’s okay I suppose.

Other then these miniscule problems, I absolutely love my job and the people I work with. I honestly can’t wait to do this for the rest of my life.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who asked about how my job was going and who encouraged me when I was feeling really nervous.

Now I’m going to read because I have to put up a March wrap up on Friday and my current total for March is 3 miserable books.
